Puerto Rico Announcement : Operations : South Atlantic Express Scheduled Arrival Time Update
November 7th, 2011
PUERTO RICO SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
South Atlantic Express (SAX) Scheduled Arrival Time Update
Dear Valued Customer:
Horizon Lines is making a seasonal adjustment to our South Atlantic Express (SAX) arrival time in San
Juan. Our target arrival time on Monday mornings in San Juan will change from 7:00AM to 8:00AM
effective Monday, November 21st. The factors necessitating this change are:
1) Expiration of 2011 Daylight Savings time on November 6th, 2011 - Because the US mainland
observes Daylight Savings and Puerto Rico does not, this change removes an hour from the
transit allowance between Jacksonville and San Juan. We will get this hour back when Daylight
Savings again goes into effect on the US mainland March 11, 2012.
2) The Marine Mammal Protection Act - This federal law protects Atlantic Right Whales and
mandates a vessel speed restriction of 10 nautical miles per hour just outside Jacksonville, FL
starting November 15th, 2011. This speed restriction removes approximately 1.5 hours from
our transit allowance between Jacksonville and San Juan. We will get this time back when the
mating season ends April 15th, 2012.
These two factors will remove a combined 2.5 hours from our southbound transit allowance which
cannot be fully made up by running at faster speeds. Horizon Lines can provide a more consistent on-
time arrival by targeting an 8:00AM cargo start each Monday.
Horizon Lines customers can contribute to the earliest possible start time in San Juan by furnishing
loads to our Jacksonville terminal with as much lead time as possible prior to each sailing. This allows
for a more efficient stowage operation and earlier departure time which may allow us to make a
7:00AM when other conditions allow.

or Customer Service at 1-877-678-7447.
Thank you for choosing Horizon Lines. Always There. Always Delivering.®
