PUERTO RICO SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
ILA and USMX Labor Negotiation Update 1
Dear Valued Customer:
We would like to ensure you are aware of ongoing labor negotiations between the US Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) which is an organization employed to provide services at our East Coast, Gulf Coast, and San Juan terminals.
The current labor agreement between the USMX and ILA is current through December 29th, 2012. Negotiations are being facilitated by a mediator assigned by the US Government’s Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service but recent news indicates a stalemate in the negotiations.
Speculation in the press is that a work stoppage may occur if a new agreement is not reached prior to December 30th. Neither the likelihood nor the scope of a work stoppage can be predicted. If a work stoppage does occur, we may not be able to transport cargo already accepted & agreed to be transported during the work stoppage.
Noting respect for the process of collective bargaining, we would like to encourage you to take steps to mitigate the risks related to a work stoppage by:
1) Taking proper precautions with all highly perishable cargo products, noting delays of several days to more than a week are possible.
2) Ensuring all hazardous waste and hazardous materials shipments are promptly removed from ocean terminals to prevent safety risks or regulatory violations.
3) Ensuring all cargo discharged from vessels prior to December 29th is promptly removed from ocean terminals to ensure access to already-shipped products.
