Dear Valued Customer:
The 2008 Hurricane Season has been particularly active. We want to assure you that at each of our terminals specific inclement weather protocols are followed.
Our associates execute the necessary safety precautions to ensure that our terminals are secure and that your cargo is of the upmost priority. In addition to the normal safety and security measures, special precautions are made for the following:
• Pharmaceuticals and refrigerated containers are connected to alternative fuel sources to ensure continuous power supply in case of electrical failure.
• Containers and tanks containing hazardous materials are secured or moved to a safe location.
• The dispatch of refrigerated and hazardous loads is expedited.
• Equipment and loose objects are secured to prevent damage in heavy winds and rain.
In conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard, Horizon Lines follows the prescribed actions outlined in the Marine Safety Information Bulletins concerning our terminals and vessels.
Our top priorities are safety and our customers. We understand that weather is unpredictable and based on the existing weather conditions in San Juan on Tuesday, October 14th with approval from the U.S. Coast Guard; we were allowed to give our customers additional time to make deliveries and pickups.
On Wednesday, October 15th after careful analysis of the weather conditions we made the decision to keep our terminal open until 5:00 PM confident it would better serve our customers and that the safety of our associates would not be compromised.
Today, October 16th the U.S. Coast Guard lifted restrictions on the Port of San Juan and we were able to open the terminal at 7:00 AM, earlier than expected.
During periods of severe weather, Horizon Lines is prepared to keep our associates and your cargo safe and secure. We will continue to provide detailed communications to keep you up to speed on tropical weather developments and their effects on our vessels and terminal operations.
