Horizon Lines Celebrates Safety Week in Puerto Rico

Charlotte, NC (July 18, 2008) – Horizon Lines, Inc., (NYSE:HRZ), the nation's leading domestic ocean shipping and integrated logistics company, celebrated Safety Week in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a special “Kids Safety Day” on July 15. Horizon Lines’ Kids Safety Day was created six years ago to promote the value of safety among youth. Twenty-seven children ages 6 to 11, all of whom are family members of Horizon Lines associates, participated in this year’s program.
Activities included a drug prevention presentation put on by representatives from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with a special appearance by a K-9 police dog to show how the canines are used in drug searches. The highlight of the day was a vessel tour of the Horizon Lines Trader, led by Capt. John Loftus.
Accompanied by Jacob Wegrzyn, Senior VP and General Manager of Horizon Lines’ Puerto Rico division, the children donned hard hats and vests and explored the vessel and bridge. The day’s events concluded with questions about lessons learned, and prizes for the kids.
“Kids Safety Day is a wonderful way of teaching our associates’ children the importance of safety in the maritime industry. We were thrilled to provide these kids the opportunity to participate in the demonstrations, wear the Horizon Lines safety gear and climb aboard our vessel,” said Janet Nieves, Safety and Security Manager of Horizon Lines.
The Puerto Rico Shipping Association (PRSA) celebrated Safety Week for the first time this year, thanks to the initiative of Janet Nieves, who also serves as President of the Security/Safety Committee of the PRSA.
