Horizon Lines Recognized with Environmental Excellence Awards for 2007 by Chamber of Shipping of Ame

Thirteen Ships Operated by Horizon Lines Honored

WASHINGTON, DC (September 19, 2007) HORIZON LINES (NYSE:HRZ) proudly received the Certificates of Recognition on behalf of 13 vessels honored for outstanding achievements in Environmental Excellence. The presentation was made at the fourth annual Environmental Achievement Awards Dinner, held at the Washington Marriott Hotel, in Washington DC.

Captain and CM - Jim Kitterman accepted this recognition on behalf of the HORIZON ENTERPRISE and CE and 1AE - Jim Lackey accepted this recognition on behalf of the HORIZON NAVIGATOR. The 13 vessels cited for achievement hold a combined 94 years of environmental excellence. The HORIZON ENTERPRISE and HORIZON NAVIGATOR have achieved exceptional excellence by combining for 34 consecutive years of excellence.

This was a well-attended event and was sponsored by the members of the Chamber of Shipping of America. The Chamber of Shipping of America, founded in 1917 is an organization representing U.S. owners, operators and charterers of U.S. and foreign-flag ocean-going vessels. CSA promotes sound public policy regarding marine safety, maritime security and environmental protection and supports the domestic maritime industry and open international trade. Mike Bohlman serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the past three (3) years. Joe Cox is the current CEO and President. Photos of this presentation can be found on www.KnowShips.org.

Nearly 700 vessels from 45 companies accounted for more than 3,500 years of excellence. These figures are truly a testament to the guiding programs and the dedication of all mariners to the preservation of our waterways and oceans through conscious and deliberate attention, quality judgment and action.

The Commandant of the US Coast Guard - Admiral Thad Allen was the guest speaker and aptly identified these as the "non-event" awards. He went on to say that these are the kinds of "non-events" we can all be proud of.

The Commandant proudly shared statistics that demonstrate that mariner's, shipping companies' and government agencies' emphasis on preserving the environment has yielded positive results through the years. He proclaimed that in the early 1970's more than 25 oil contamination events of 7 tons or more occurred in and around US waters, while during this past year less than 6% of these events and accumulated contamination have occurred worldwide. We are proving to be good stewards of our oceans and must continue to focus on achieving excellence in this area.
